FOOD SAFETY MITRA SCHEME – FSSAI launches FSM scheme to help small-scale food businesses

Over the last few decades, FSSAI has launched countless schemes to strengthen and modernize food safety rules, laws, and regulations. Last year on World Food Day, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare launched the ‘Food Safety Mitra Scheme’ that focuses on giving assistance to small-scale and medium-scale food business on Food Safety Laws, which will smooth the process of FSSAI licensing, FSSAI registration, hygiene ratings, and training programs.

India is a gigantic country and is home to one of the biggest food markets in the world. Food Business, even after being such a vast industry has been facing a lot of challenges and hurdles. In fact, there are hordes of unregistered food joints that run in India due to the lack of knowledge and process. Hence, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched schemes like ‘Food Safety Mitra (FSM)’ that makes it simple to manage and administer the food business.
By now, you must have understood the Food Safety Mitra Scheme, let us now get on to the details of the FSM scheme to help you comprehend better –

What are the benefits of the FSM scheme?

Along with strengthening the Food License Laws, this scheme aims at increasing and creating new employment opportunities for many youngsters especially for those belonging to food and nutrition backgrounds. It helps in FSSAI License.
Those working under FMS would be endowed with proper training and certification, which will be given by FSSAI Registration Department. This will help them to get remuneration from the food business houses in return for their services.

What role would Food Safety Mitra play for food businesses?

The Food Safety Mitra will be playing four roles namely Digital Mitra, Hygiene Mitra, Trainer Mitra, and Campaign Ambassador.

The Digital Mitra will help and assist the organization to apply for Food license and FSSAI registration. They will also help the establishments with pending and suspended FSSAI licenses or FSSAI Food License processes.

The Hygiene Mitra will be responsible for conducting audits at the food joint or outlet to check whether the business is taking care of all the safety and hygiene standards. These Mitras will also be training the food safety supervisors and food handlers on hygiene practices.
The Training Mitra will aim at providing training to the food safety supervisors and conduct programs at FSSAI certified campuses.
The Campaign Ambassadors is one of the most important categories as they help in spreading awareness among customers by creating campaigns about FMS trainers on various platforms.

How can one become a Food Safety Mitra?

If you are keen on becoming a Food Safety Mitra, then you can simply register a form available at the FSSAI License website. After registering, you will have to conduct an online test and if selected you will be called for an interview. All the selected candidates will be provided with training and certificate by the FSSAI, which has to be renewed every two years.
There are various criteria and stages for the four different categories of Food Safety Mitras. You need to be well acquainted with the required knowledge and qualification.

What is the benefit of FMS to the consumer?

The Food Safety Mitra’s will help the food business to understand the hygiene levels and food safety process to be followed at various stages from production to packaging, and distribution. This will, in turn, ensure that the food reaching the end customers is unadulterated and hygienically processed.
