What is an FSSAI license?

Canteens can be a great way for women and underqualified people to start earning their livelihood, but because everything is legalized nowadays, not even a canteen can be set up without a proper licence.


Here is where FSSAI come into the picture. FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), which is established under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, government of India, regulates and supervises the food and safety standards for public health. Hence, it aims to bring about a strict quality check for inferior quality food products.
So if a person or a group of people are willing to set up an outlet, mess, hotel, restaurant, catering services, milk vendors, grocery stores or a canteen, they are supposed to get a FSSAI licence from FSSAI to get started. Because of digitization, forms for the license can be filled in online and hence an application can be made.
A fee starting from Rs. 2000 is levied to an applicant for an FSSAI license, the fee may further increase depending on the scale of your company, the turnover and the capital involved.


INSTRUCTIONS TO ACQUIRE AN FSSAI LICENSE
The instructions require filling in some information in the application form like name of the business or firm, or of the person willing to apply, email id, nature of business, state, landmark name, phone number, designation, address of the business and further an agreement whether you are willing to abide by the terms and conditions of the online government portal
Further the person or organization is expected to make an online payment of the stipulated amount to be paid:
  1. A basic charge – Starting from Rs. 2999/-
  2. A standard charge – Starting from Rs. 7999/-
  3. A premium charge – Starting from Rs. 14999/-

The next step to the process will include a government executive processing the application to further validate it. Next, the certificate will be mailed to the applicant.

HOW DOES FOOD LICENSE HELP

The FSSAI registration acquired is usually printed on product labels and also on outlets like restaurants, hotels, cafes, canteens, etc. The Food license number on the label ensures the customer or the consumer about the superior quality of the product

LEGAL ACTION

In case of without a license, the manufacturer or distributer of the food product have to pay fine of 5 lakhs or imprisonment.
Legal action is to be taken on people carrying out the following practices:
1.    Selling substandard quality products
2.    Production of food products under unhygienic, unsafe and hazardous conditions
3.    Misbranding and improvising the product
4.    Adulteration of the food product, making it inferior in quality
Examples of adulteration have resulted in deaths of people
Therefore, Food license or FSSAI License is the first and foremost mandatory thing to have for any food business owner to run a successful school canteen.
